Designed by John Nash in 1828, Marble Arch was intended to be the chief entrance to Buckingham Palace. However, when the Palace was extended, the Arch was relocated to its current position as an entrance to Hyde Park. Built of white Carrara marble, the design was taken from the triumphal arch of Constantine in Rome. By tradition, only senior members of the royal family, the King's Troop and the Royal Horse Artillery are allowed to ride or drive through the landmark.
